Former Dean of AVC honoured by Canadian Veterinary Medical Association

Dr. Tim Ogilvie, immediate past Dean of the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI, has been awarded the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s prestigious 2011 President’s Award.

The CVMA’s President's Award is given from time to time to recognize an individual member for exceptional contributions and devotion to the association. Dr. Ogilvie accepted his award at the CVMA’s annual conference held in Halifax earlier this month.

“I was pleased to present the 2011 President’s Award to Dr. Tim Ogilvie. Tim’s contributions to the CVMA and the veterinary profession in Canada have been exemplary and far-reaching,” says Dr. Doug Roberts, President of the CVMA from 2010-2011. “In his role as Dean of AVC, Tim provided valuable input and insight during annual deans’ meetings with the CVMA and specifically when the deans and the CVMA jointly campaigned successfully for much needed federal infrastructure funding for our veterinary schools earlier this decade.”
Dr. Ogilvie graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1975 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and then went on to earn his Master of Sciences and Board Certification at the University of Guelph. In his early career, he worked in private veterinary practice in Kensington, PEI.

Dr. Ogilvie joined AVC as a founding faculty member in 1985 after serving as Director of the Animal Industry Services Branch of the PEI Department of Agriculture and Forestry. He was Acting Dean of AVC from 1998 to 1999 and Chair of the Department of Health Management from 1990 to 1998. During this time, he was also Co-director of AVC's Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

He has held many positions over the years, including President of the CVMA from 1991 to 1992, Chair of the Canadian Agri-Food Research Council Expert Committee on Animal Health from 2002 to 2006, and member of the Atlantic Agricultural Coordinating Council (1998 to 2006) and the CFIA Avian Influenza Advisory Committee (2006 to 2007).

Dr. Ogilvie has also served on UPEI’s Senior Management Group and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and as President of the Canadian Faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine.

In 2008 Dr. Ogilvie was honoured by having AVC’s award-winning summer vet camp program named The Dr. Tim Ogilvie AVC Vet Camp. He is currently a professor in AVC’s Department of Health Management and is active in the Island community.

“On behalf of AVC, I congratulate Dr. Oglivie on this well-deserved award,” says Dr. Don Reynolds, Dean of AVC. “As a founding member of AVC’s faculty, Dr. Oglivie contributes a wealth of knowledge, expertise and experience to the College, its students and the veterinary profession. It is very fitting that he has been honoured with the CVMA President’s Award.”

Dr. Ogilvie is the second person from AVC to be honoured with the CVMA’s President’s Award. Dr. Alice Crook, Coordinator of AVC’s Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre, received the award in 2009.
