Congratulations to students Alexander Burrows, Emma Vaasjo, Michael Walker, Stephanie Simpson, and Nicole Mayne who placed third in the veterinary student division of the 11th annual Intercollegiate Animal Welfare Judging and Assessment Contest, held at Michigan State University in November. Each student was provided with contrasting scenarios for the management of race horses, caged birds, and farrowing pigs. They were required to assess and evaluate the welfare of the animals in each situation and present their reasoning to a judge. There was also a practical “on-farm” assessment of dairy cattle. Dr. Michael Cockram was the team coach with specialist coaching from Dr. Heather Ayles (pigs), Dr. Erica Koch (horses), Dr. Marion Desmarchelier (parakeets), and Dr. Reny Lothrop (dairy cows). Funding for the students’ trip was provided through the SJDAWC Student Project Fund, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare, UK.
