AVC’s annual Fall Awards and Recognition Night, held earlier this fall, was very successful, with approximately $115,000 in awards, scholarships and bursaries given out to DVM and graduate students. Dr. Don Reynolds, Dean of AVC, praised the students for their academic achievements and expressed deep appreciation to the donors who support the scholarships and awards presented at the ceremony.
Dr. Wendy Duckett of AVC's Department of Health Management received the Pfizer Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award at AVC's Fall Awards and Recognition Night in October. This award is presented to an outstanding teacher, who, through his or her ability, character and leadership, contributes significantly to the advancement of the veterinary profession. The Class of 2011 has made a substantial donation to the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre for the Pegasus Helping Hand Fund. Established in 2004 by the Pegasus Family Foundation, the Fund provides financial assistance to people of limited means for non-routine care of their animals. The SJDAWC thanks the Class of 2011 for its generosity.
Regulatory limits for somatic cell count in milk are scheduled to decrease by 20 per cent, from 500,000 to 400,000, in August of 2012. Somatic cells are an indicator of overall udder health and influence milk product quality.
