Applications are now being accepted for the national award-winning Dr. Tim Ogilvie AVC Vet Camp program. This year’s program will run during three weeks in July and promises to be a dream come true for students interested in animals and science. Camp information and application form can be found at www.upei.ca/vetcamp. Deadline for applications is Friday, March 13, 2009.

The number of visitors to Atlantic Veterinary College's annual Open House toppled old records with approximately 3,100 people taking part. The student-run event featured displays, demonstrations, a mini-zoo, the ever popular Teddy Bear Clinic, and surgical gowning and gloving. A highlight of this year’s Open House was the Parade of Breeds, featuring over 30 different – and sometimes unique – canine breeds.

Seventy-five scholarships and awards were presented to AVC students in recognition of their academic excellence and skills at the 2009 AVC Fall Awards and Recognition Night, held on October 8th at McMillan Hall in the Murphy Student Centre.   "We are very proud of our hard-working students and thankful for the generous spirits of our donors," says Dr. Margaret Coffey, Chair of AVC's Award Committe. AVC alumni will be gathering from July 29th to August 1st next summer to celebrate their ten year reunion as AVC graduates. Preliminary plans include a wine and cheese, Meet and Greet, golf tournament, barbecue, dinner and dance, and a farewell brunch. More information will follow as plans are finalized. AVC was a proud sponsor of the 8th annual PEI Open Farm Day which took place in late September. "Connecting People and Agriculture" was the theme during which farmers from across the Island took a day to showcase their farms and woodlots. Visitors were treated to farm tours, demonstrations and learned about recent innovations making farming more sustainable and efficient.

In January 2009, Dr. John VanLeeuwen and three students from the Atlantic Veterinary College partnered with local non-governmental organization, Farmers Helping Farmers, and cattle farmers in remote parts of Kenya to improve the health and productivity in their animals. On Saturday May 23, The Chinook Project team arrived back in PEI after an expedition to northern Canada, where they delivered veterinary services to 161 dogs, several cats and ferrets, that would otherwise not have had this service available to them. The PEI Science Fair was held at UPEI on April 2 with 331 students and 248 projects registered. A number of science projects related to animals including studies of wildlife, health, behavior and implications of global warming upon habitat. Dr. Wendy Duckett, AVC equine specialist, recently presented a session on oral health in horses to members of the public, horse lovers and students. A blue whale found dead on the shore of Western PEI was buried near Tignish in November 1987. Twenty years later, the University of British Columbia teamed up with Atlantic Veterinary College and volunteers from across the Island to excavate the remains. The skeleton of the blue whale would then be trucked across the country for a display at UBC.
