The sixth annual AVC Animal Welfare: In Practice conference held on September 17 and 18 was a success. Twenty-three people from AVC spent a day in September cleaning up Brackley Beach during the annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. In just a few hours, they collected 15 bags of garbage and recyclable items, lobster traps and buoys, a piece of porch furniture, old boards and large plastic containers! Dr. Jonathan Spears of AVC's Department of Biomedical Sciences recently hosted a two-day workshop for consulting veterinarians, facility managers and facility technicians working for academic institutions that deal with finfish as laboratory animals. AVC and the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso (PUCV) in Chile recently launched a two-year twinning project to combat Infectious Salmon Anaemia virus (ISAv). Innovation PEI recently announced the winners of its 2010 Graduate and Post-Doctoral Fellowships. They include 10 graduate students at AVC and UPEI, and two applications from AVC and UPEI faculty to attract graduate and post-doctoral students. Now in its second year, the program is providing multi-year funding to 23 UPEI students in total.
AVC faculty members were recognized for excellence in teaching at the annual UPEI Faculty Recognition and Awards Banquet on October 2. Whelan Green Hat Award at UPEI’s Founders’ Day ceremony on September 24, for his pivotal role in the establishment of AVC at UPEI. Well-known Nova Scotia veterinarian Dr. Hubert Bennett (OVC ’57) was awarded the AVC 2010 Atlantic Award of Excellence in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Care during the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association’s annual general meeting on November 6. Throughout his long career in veterinary medicine, Dr. Bennett, who retired in 2007, was a tireless advocate for his patients and their owners, and a great mentor for young veterinarians.
