Dr. Robert (Bob) Curtis was recently honored with the prestigious Honourable Eugene F. Whelan Green Hat Award. This award represents the highest level of distinction paid to members of the AVC community. As part of recent UPEI Homecoming events, AVC Class of 1998 grad, Dr. Lynne O’Sullivan, was presented with the University’s Distinguished Alumni Award for 2009. Dr. O’Sullivan is a tenured Associate Professor at Ontario Veterinary College and one of only a handful of board-certified veterinary cardiologists in Canada. Please click here to read the citation. Dr. Alfonso López was the keynote speaker at the XXI meeting of the Spanish Society of Anatomic Veterinary Pathology that took place in Lugo, Spain in June. The meeting was hosted by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela with over 100 pathologists from Spain, Portugal and Italy in attendance. Cynthia Gaskill, former AVC PhD graduate (Class of 2001), was recently featured in an online article for equine health care. After obtaining her degree from the AVC she took a tenure faculty position at the College as a clinical toxicologist before joining the Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center (LDDC) at the University of Kentucky, as an analytical toxicologist, associate professor, and veterinary clinical diagnostic toxicologist. Thirty-three North American veterinary students will benefit from the Winner's Circle Scholarship Program, with partnership from The Race for Education and the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Foundation. Among this year's recipients is AVC Class of 2010 member, Thais McCoy of Rhode Island. Pathology and Microbiology PhD Candidate, Dante Mateo, was recently awarded a Craig Dobbin Scholarship by The Ireland Canada University Foundation. Effective June 1, AVC will see three faculty members assume responsibilty in leadership positions. Dr. Darcy Shaw, former Chair of Companion Animals, is now the Associate Dean of Professional Services. Dr. Judy Au, AVC Class of 1993, was recently featured in the Calgary Metro News for her success in the profession of veterinary medicine. “Dr. Do-it-all” Deanna Daneshment, AVC Class of 2003, was recently featured in the Kingston Whig Standard daily newspaper. Deanna (nee Russell) is both a family physician in Wolfe Island, Ontario and a veterinarian with special training in zoo and wildlife animals. On any given day, Deanna may be found in her clinic dealing with an outbreak of measles or she may be in the north doing health checks on polar bears. Click here to read more.

For close to 25 years, Dr. John Burka, a professor of Pharmacology in AVC’s Department of Biomedical Sciences, has donated his time and skills to help others help themselves. John is the co-ordinator of the Ten Thousand Villages craft sale at UPEI, a three-day event that involves close to 50 volunteers and hundreds of hours of planning and set-up.
