Atlantic Veterinary College
2012 Summer Research & Leadership Program
Program Details
About the Program:
The Atlantic Veterinary College invites DVM and BSc students interested in participating in a mentored research program during the summer of 2012 to apply to our AVC Summer Research and Leadership Program. The program introduces students to careers in research by incorporating a summer research project with a faculty member, which is complimented with a weekly lecture. Financial support is generously provided by the Atlantic Veterinary College and the Merial Veterinary Scholars Program. Academic credit towards fourth year rotations will be given to DVM students for the completion of the program.
The Goals of the Program are:
-
to provide each student with a summer experience in animal health research.
-
to provide each student with information about potential career pathways in veterinary medicine with a focus on research-related careers.
-
to expose each student to important aspects of research, like ethics, IP, and research communication.
Students will work with faculty advisors and other research personnel on a specific research project for approximately 3 months, from May to August. The program will also consist of a series of seminars and round table discussions on various aspects of research as well as give the students an opportunity to present their research results. DVM students have the additional opportunity to apply to the Merial Veterinary Scholars Program http://www.merialscholars.com/programs.html either here at AVC (2 positions available this year) or at other universities across Canada and the United States. This program is designed to provide enhanced exposure to biomedical research and career opportunities in research.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be DVM or BSc students who have completed their first or second year of study. The program is open to students outside the Atlantic Veterinary College as well as within. In order to partake in the program you must have (or obtain) a summer position with a faculty mentor at the AVC.

At the Atlantic Veterinary College the major focus areas of research are comparative biomedicine, fish health, population health, animal welfare, and infectious diseases/public health. Check the college website http://avc.upei.ca/departments for faculty research interests and current projects.
You should also regularly check the UPEI Human Resources website for advertised summer student positions offered by AVC researchers http://www.upei.ca/humanres/competition/student/ Participation in the Summer Research & Leadership Program is not compulsory, so check with the researcher first before accepting the position.
Stipend Information:
Stipends are arranged with your supervisor. For Merial Veterinary Scholars, a stipend of $2,500 is provided by the Merial Veterinary Scholars Program and the remainder is covered by the faculty mentor. It will cover a period of 13 - 14 weeks from May – August 2012.

Rationale, Student/Faculty Responsibilities
Rationale for the Program:
-
Recognition that DVM students should be made aware of all available career pathways in veterinary medicine.
-
Recognition that BSc majors should be made aware of the opportunities for academic and research careers in the biomedical sciences, following undergraduate and graduate studies.
-
Provide students with a means of increasing their exposure to research-related activities during the summer months of their undergraduate program.
Student Responsibilities:
-
To participate in the oral and poster presentation sessions of the schedule where “research project/plans” and the “summary of activities/results” are presented (the latter in poster format).
-
To participate in the roundtable, lecture, and seminar sessions outlined on the schedule.
-
To participate in at least one field trip/outing on the schedule.
Faculty Responsibilities:
-
Adjust the student’s work schedule to permit attendance at program events and to accommodate a field trip/outing.
-
To assist the student in preparation of the oral presentation of summer “research/project plans” and of the poster describing the summer’s research or educational project.
-
To provide the necessary resources for a positive summer research experience.
