AVC holds annual Open House on September 24

The Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island will hold its 23rd annual Open House on Saturday, September 24, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Organized and run by AVC students, this free event offers a snapshot of life at a veterinary medical school. Visitors will see many demonstrations and exhibits, including a parade of dog breeds, some unusual animals at a mini-zoo, draft horses, a painted cow and horse, and much more.

Children can bring their favourite stuffed toys for a check-up and treatment at the Teddy Bear Clinic. And they can have their faces painted, learn how to gown and glove for surgery, watch a magic show with Scratch Adams, the Clown, and reel in some cool prizes at the fish pond. Kids can get a “passport” when they come to Open House and become an AVC Kritter Kid by getting stamps from 12 different booths or displays. AVC Open House is one of the largest, most successful open houses in Atlantic Canada.

Also taking place on Saturday, the UPEI Faculty of Science will hold its popular Showcase on Science expo at AVC, and from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., the UPEI Alumni Association will hold a free barbeque and games outside the AVC Research Complex.

At 1:30 p.m., Dr. Abd-El-Aziz will be formally installed as UPEI’s sixth President and Vice-Chancellor in a ceremony at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. The ceremony, which is open to the public, will also include the recognition of UPEI’s 2011 Founders and the awarding of AVC’s 2011 Hon. Eugene Whelan Green Hat Award.

These events and more are part of the Celebrate UPEI! weekend at UPEI.
